Hope after Crisis resources Finding Connection, Purpose and Hope After Crisis A seasonal appeal for people rebuilding their lives in London In 2025, life has become harder than ever for people in London facing crisis. Rising living costs, insecure housing, stretched public services and long waiting lists are compounding the impact of domestic abuse, exploitation through modern slavery, mental ill health, and involvement with the criminal justice system. For many, crisis does not end when immediate danger passes. It leaves people isolated, anxious, and disconnected - unsure how to rebuild a life with dignity, stability and purpose. At Hestia, we know that recovery is possible. With the right support, people can move beyond crisis and reclaim their sense of self, connection and hope for the future. Together with The Evidence Centre, we undertook the largest review to date of the impact of purposeful, joyful activities on people recovering from trauma and crisis, analysing evidence from 480 studies. Nine in ten studies identified clear benefits, providing robust research evidence for what Hestia has long seen in its day-to-day work with adults and children in crisis. About the Programme: Connection, Recovery and Purpose Alongside housing, therapeutic and practical support, Hestia delivers a programme of structured, purposeful activities that help people recovering from trauma reconnect with life. This programme brings together: Social connection - reducing isolation and rebuilding trust through shared experiences Creative and physical activities - supporting emotional regulation, confidence and wellbeing Moments of enjoyment and achievement -reminding people that life can still hold meaning and pleasure Pathways to purpose - helping individuals see a reason to get through the day, the week, and ultimately to plan for the future Independent research shows that planned, meaningful activity plays a critical role in recovery from trauma. It helps regulate the nervous system, builds confidence, restores agency, and strengthens relationships - all essential foundations for long-term stability. For someone rebuilding their life after abuse, exploitation, prison, or a mental health crisis, these moments can be transformative. As one person told us: “It reminded me who I was before everything happened — and who I could still become.” Last year, Hestia supported nearly 23,000 people across London. • 97% reported a good relationship with their support worker • 93% were satisfied with the care they received • 9 in 10 moved on positively and feeling hopeful about their future Your Support Can Make This Possible Seasonal giving allows us to expand this programme at a time when isolation and distress are often most acute. With the backing of strategic partners and family trusts, Hestia is building on 55 years of expertise to transform how London responds to crisis - not only keeping people safe, but helping them rediscover hope and purpose. We would be delighted to explore partnership opportunities further. In the meantime, we invite you to consider a seasonal gift to help make recovery, connection and possibility real for those who need it most. Manage Cookie Preferences
